New iPhone Syncs with Microsoft Exchange Server

I am sure this article will touch the hearts of Exchange and iPhone lovers everywhere because they will now be able to say that the iPhone has officially arrived into the business world.

The first release of the iPhone left many Microsoft Exchange users unhappy. They hear about this new cool device and run out and buy one.. then find out.. I PAID WHAT?..AND IT ONLY SYNCS MY EMAIL? Yeah ..kind of depressing if you have had a Blackberry, Windows Mobile or PalmOS phone with wireless syncing of your Outlook data; It's like taking 5 steps back in time technology wise and renders it almost useless for business people.

NOW the good news! Apple listened and responded quickly to customer demand. The release of the new 3G iPhone now incorporates the ability to sync your email, calendar, and contacts wirelessly between your iPhone and your Exchange Mailbox.

It is important to understand what each device can wirelessly sync if you are considering moving from a Blackberry, Windows Mobile, or PalmOS device to an iPhone. Here is a quick cheat sheet below and they all assume you are using the device with a Microsoft Exchange Mailbox.

  1. iPhone - syncs email, calendar and contacts
  2. Blackberry (using BES Server) - syncs email, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes
  3. Windows Mobile - syncs email, calendar, contacts and tasks
  4. PalmOS (using Good Server) - syncs email, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes

We have also heard that AT&T is offering some attractive upgrade options for people who paid a small fortune for the first model. For existing Link2Exchange customers who want to configure their Exchange Mailbox to their new 3G iPhone for wireless syncing please refer to our knowledgebase article below.

NOTE: The iPhone has to be the newer 3G model to support this feature. First version iPhones only support email syncing.

3G iPhone Exchange Settings - Once you go to this page be sure to enter your link2exchange email address into the box at the top and click customize. This will customize the instructions for your mailbox.

Good to know! One more reason for me to get an iPhone ;)

I have the old iPhone and once I updated the software to version 2.0, I was able to get active exchange working just fine. I now get email, contacts and calendar synced automatically.

John - thanks for that valuable tidbit. I was not aware that they had it available through a software update. I guess the only real compelling reason to upgrade the device is for faster 3G data on it.

This is great news. Now all I have to do is let the Verizon contract on my Mororola Q run out and toodle on down to the AT&T store.
I wonder if anyone has has signal strength issues with AT&T. Synching is important and signal availability is important, too. (I realize this may be a bit off topic).

Ken - in my experience signal strength is a factor of the device itself and the carrier. I personally have AT&T and my home is in a tough area signal strength wise. My wife has the Motorola Razor and I have the Blackjack II and we are both on AT&T. Her phone gets much better reception than mine in our house. As a general rule the PDA phones seem to have worse reception that standard flip phones. With respect to carrier coverage this can vary some. You could have Verizon and travel the same area all the time. What happens is you get use to where the deadspots are..then you switch to another carrier and they could have very similiar coverage but the dead spots are in other areas.. so the perception is that the service might be worse. These days the big carriers have solid voice and data coverage so if you can I would reccommend asking people in your area that have AT&T how they like the service. If you can get a rep to give you an iPhone to try for a few days that is the best option. Make sure to try it at your home and your office first as these are the two places you will definately want good coverage. If you see someone with an iPhone stop them and ask them about the coverage. The best place to find PDA lovers is the airport these days.. they are literally everywhere so if you have any travel plans just remember to strike up a conversation with all those people in the airport excercising their fingers on their iPhones.
